~ Early Web Links ~

Just finished my first homepage last night and I'm so happy it's just plain HTML and a couple gifs. No frameworks, no javascript, just vibes. This directory rules!!

I pulled up this site to show my two kids what the internet looked like when I was their age. My daughter said "why is it so plain?" and honestly that made me a little sad. I tried to explain that someone sat down and typed every single tag by hand, no drag-and-drop, no templates. Just a person and a text editor. She actually thought that was pretty cool once it clicked. Thank you for keeping this directory going. We bookmarked it!

OH MY GOD I have been clicking through this directory for like three hours now and I am NOT exaggerating!! Every link is a little treasure!! Found someone's hand-coded shrine to their pet lizard and a geocities-style page about crystals and I almost CRIED!! This is what the internet is supposed to feel like!! YES. I've been saying this for years!! You don't need React to make a cool website. You don't need Next.js. You don't need a build step. You need a text editor and some HTML and maybe a little CSS if you're feeling fancy :) I started redoing my personal site last month, just raw HTML like I used to write in 2003, and honestly it's the most fun I've had coding in ages. So glad directories like this exist. The personal web is BACK ^_^

oh man this directory is SO my jam!! i miss when the internet felt like walking through a weird neighborhood where everyone decorated their house differently. now everything is the same five apps and everyone posts the same stuff for The Algorithm. back then you'd click a random link and end up on someone's page about their pet lizard or their favorite pasta recipes and it was WONDERFUL. no likes, no followers, just people being weirdos on their own little corner of the web ^_^ keep this alive!!

Great directory! Does anyone else remember those old webrings where you could click 'next' and 'previous' to hop between sites? I used to spend hours just clicking through the Origami Webring back in like 1999. Every site had a different background tile and a little under construction gif somewhere. I run a site about paper folding and I've been trying to recreate that feel. Would love to find anyone who was part of that same ring!

ok so i just found this site like 2 weeks ago and ive been going down a RABBIT HOLE of old personal pages and geocities archives and stuff. people literally just made websites about their cats and their favorite anime and it was so pure?? like nobody was trying to go viral or build a brand they were just being THEMSELVES and it was beautiful. now i wanna learn html and make my own page lol ^_^ thanks for putting this directory together it means a lot =D

Love this directory so much! I've been running my rock and mineral collecting page since 2021 and honestly it's so much more fun than posting on Instagram where nobody sees anything unless you game the algorithm. Here I can just make a page about agates and someone who actually cares about agates will find it. That's the whole internet I fell in love with back in the day. Bookmarked!

I'd rather hand-code a janky table layout at 2am than post one more thing on a platform that treats my stuff like content to be optimized. Give me a guestbook and a hit counter any day.

honestly webrings and link pages were the BEST way to find cool stuff online. like someone curated a list of sites they actually liked and you could just click through and find weird gems all afternoon. now everything is behind an algorithm that shows you the same 5 websites. i miss when discovery was human and not optimized. also link pages are literally just anchor tags and thats beautiful. no npm install needed lol. glad directories like this still exist, keep it going

There is something so satisfying about viewing source on a page and actually being able to read it. Just clean HTML, maybe some inline CSS, a table layout if we're feeling fancy.
